** random scene - post Turn Coat **
I've been watching him all night, flitting from one group of students to another, like a bee in the flowers. The younger students love him, listen to him, because they can relate to him. Whereas, with me, they're scared. If they listen to me, it's because they're afraid of me. Of what I might do. Not him though. He's not afraid of me at all and I think they respect him for that.

I wish we didn't have to be here at all. I hate funerals and wakes and memorial services. I don't remember my mother's - I was too young - but I was there at my father's. And I hated it. I've been to far too many since then. I want to get the hell out of here. And I want to take someone with me so I can get a drink without looking like a lonely bastard.

I catch his sleeve as he's gliding by - damn, his movements are smooth and easy and watching him turns me on - "Hey, let's get out of here and get a drink. This wake is depressing."

Ramirez raised an eyebrow, though he'd gotten used to Dresden watching him. It seemed like if he wasn't teaching he was hanging out with the older wizard and when he was teaching, Dresden liked to hang around. Carlos found it flattering, though he wasn't sure if it was because he thought Harry was trying to pick up on his charm or if the guy just wanted to spend time with him.

He wasn't thinking anything like that right now, though. His thoughts were firmly on the subject at hand, the wake and the fallen wizards they were remembering. He took the time to cross himself before looking up (always up with Harry) and quirking a grin.

"Think that's the point, man. But I can do a drink. You know anyplace around here?"

I arch an eyebrow at him. "That may be, but I need to get away from all of the people with grey clouds stuck to their heads." If he knew my life, he'd understand. I mourn in my own way that's a lot more solitary. Happens that way when there isn't family to lean on.

"Not meaning disrespect, I just need some air." I push myself off the cushy breakfast stool thing here at this not-quite-a-bar and start for the door. No one seems to notice. Guess that's good. I turn over my shoulder to make sure he's coming with. "We're in Scotland. I'm relatively certain if we toss a caber, we'll find a pub."

"Any particular reason I'd want to toss you?" he joked with a quick smile as he followed Harry's lead out.

"Oh, look who thinks he's clever..." I fire back, a lot less grumpy that it might've been an hour or so ago. "But, if I thought I'd make a decent living of it and not break my neck, I might consider it."

I know there's a decent hole in the wall around here somewhere.

"I'm sure you know your way around tossing guys," he said, utterly innocent. Do remember you called him Gallahad, Harry.

I arch an eyebrow at him over my shoulder, but say nothing. For the moment. We round a corner and there's a sign that some might consider a thing of beauty. Hanging from a wrought iron bar on the side of an old stone building is a faded wooden sign, proclaiming itself a drinking establishment that's been around since before time began. (Then again, most of them say that.)

"This'll do," I say and step down to the door to pull it open and step into the dimness of the pub. Dear lord, it reminds me of Mac's - without the head-trauma inducing ceiling fans.

Carlos slipped in right after Harry, glancing around to take in his surroundings before relaxing a ilttle.

"Yeah. Table in the corner, though."

Ramirez likes his back to the wall.

I feed him a smile with a bit more 'cheese' and sarcasm in it than usual. "You hitting on me or just playing it safe?"

Truth be told, I prefer corners and tables along the walls where I can see the door.

"I like to keep my eye on the room," he answered, which wasn't really an answer and that was how he liked it. The smile didn't do anything to dispell the vagueness.

"Safe is sexy."

This time the look's a bit more of a frown. "You sound like a condom commercial," I say and pull out a chair to take a seat, back to one wall of the corner.

"All right, 'sex is more enjoyable when you have a head; specifics unnecessary in this case'."

How do I not laugh at that? "I'll agree with you on that." The barkeep makes his way over to see what we'd like - good Scottish ale, of course. He tells us he'll bring the house special. At this point, if it's got alcohol in it and doesn't taste like piss, I'm probably going to drink it.

He sat with his back to the wall, slouched like an actor at a photoshoot.

I hate him. He falls into a chair and looks good. I could have a professional come in and arrange me like I was sitting for a portrait and I'd still look ridiculous. All arms and legs everywhere.

"You doing okay?" I ask him. Not sure if anyone has yet. I know how I am.

What? Not his fault his t-shirt was riding up on one side, showing a very nice slice of hip.

"I'm alive, aren't I? That's about as much as you can ask around here nowadays. What about you, man?"

A shrug as the barkeep clunks two heavy steins almost as large as my head onto the table, beer foam sloshing over the sides. "Never thought I'd say this, but losing Morgan is going to hurt us - a lot."

"Losing Morgan is a gutting, no two ways around it," he said as he pulled his stein up for a long pull.

I nod. "I know. And these kids we've got? They've gotta learn fast - real fast - or there won't be much of a Council left to try to save."

And this is not making me any less depressed. Why the fuck did I start with this subject? Stupid, Harry.

"Because I find it far easier than making the more arrogant assumption that we're invincible."

Which, obviously, is only part of it.

Had enough drinking, time for a walk. The night air is cool and damp, like it's just rained. It's comfortable. I kind of like Scotland, I think.

"C'mon, Ramirez. I'm feeling vaguely adventurous. Let's go for a walk."

He rolled his eyes a little, but he stood and he started putting on his cloak again. It was too damn cold and wet around here for his taste.
